How To Program A Garage Door Opener

If you have to repair your garage door opener or change the battery in your garage door remote, programming a garage door opener is a fairly simple process.

Step 1 – Change the Batteries

When you need to program a garage door opener, it’s a good time to change the batteries. If you don’t, the batteries will fail sooner and you’ll need to program the garage door opener again. It’s better to plan ahead and change the batteries while you’re programming.

Step 2 – Press the Program Button
The program button for a garage door opener is usually located on the back of the garage door opener. The button is normally small and can be either red or black. You’ll need to use a stepladder or a stool to reach it.

Press and hold the button for about fifteen seconds until the light on the opener blinks. This indicates that the door opener is ready to be programmed.

Step 3 – Program the Remote
After pressing the program button on the opener, you’ll have approximately 30 seconds to get to your remote and press the button. Hold the button down for about 15 seconds until the LED light begins to blink rapidly (or, on some models, to hold steady). This means the remote is in synch with the opener, and you’re good to go.
