How to Promote and Sell Your Music

If you are brand new to the music business and you are trying to sell your music, it can be a bit frustrating. So you are wondering, "How do I go about selling my music?" Well, whether you know it or not, you have all you need right at your own fingertips.

There are some steps that you can follow to get started in the right direction toward selling your music. Give them a try and see where the road to riches may lead you. Here are a few steps to get you started:

Step 1 - Know What Your Goals Are

You are now ready to promote your music. So what is it you need to promote? Do you have an album or a single song that you want heard? Are you ready to put on your first concert? Would you rather have your own website with your songs listed for people to listen to?

Since you are thinking about these things, begin to set some goals for yourself. Be sure to set realistic goals that are attainable, so you will have more of a chance of succeeding.

Step 2 - Check Audience to Target

Now that you have figured out what goal you want to achieve, you need to figure out who your target audience will be. The question to ask yourself is, "Who do you want your audience to be?" Is your music for teens or young children, or more for adults who listen to country, rock or Christian music? Once you figure out who your main audience will be then you can come up with a publication if you are going to have a gig somewhere. You can even make up a mailing list to send out to your potential audience. This will get the word out about you and your new album.

Step 3 - Put Together a Promo Package

If you have ever sent a demo, then this should be familiar to you. Some of the things you will need in your promo package are:

  • A new press release giving details of your news
  • A band bio (short and one page)
  • A CD (can either be a demo or an advanced copy of a new release)
  • Any press coverage that you have received so far
  • All your contact information, including an email address
  • Add a color photo of you and the band or if you have a website, you can add the link so they can download the photo from there.

This is just the beginning of how to promote and sell your music, but this should give you some ideas on where to begin. Find a way that works for you whether it is the Internet or doing gigs at bars and parties. There are ways of letting people know you are there and you are ready to perform for them. Try doing some charities as well. That will help with publicity, and get you noticed. Don’t give up; keep on singing. You will make it.
