How to Properly Apply Satin Paint to Your Walls

Satin paint is a paint finish that provides an intermediate level of glossiness. These paints are good choices for surfaces that see a lot of activity, because they stand up to wear and tear and can be cleaned easily. To get the best out of your satin paint, you must prepare the surface well beforehand and also apply the paint properly.

Step 1 – Prepare the Room

The first step to starting a perfect paint job is to move all furniture and objects out of the way. If possible, empty the room completely. An easier way is to collect all the furniture in the middle of the room and protect them from paint with thick rag cloths. Another preparatory step is to turn off the electricity and remove the light fixtures, fans and power outlets on the walls and if applicable, on the ceilings.

Step 2 – Wash the Walls

If the walls are dirty, you must clean and scrub them thoroughly with warm soapy water to improve paint adherence and the final effect. If you have a glossy finish on the walls, you will not be able to paint over it effectively. In such a case, use a gloss remover or a solution of trisodium phosphate (TSP) and water. Remove all the residue of dirt and soap or TSP from the walls before painting.

Step 3 – Cover all Imperfections

Go over the entire surface of the walls and look for cracks, openings and scraped paint. Remove all nails from the wall, unless you intend to use the same spot again. Cover all holes with putty and let it dry. Once dry, smooth the area with sandpaper so that you have a smooth, even finish. Now you are ready to start painting. Tape off the corners and borders with masking tape. Open the windows and close the door to the room. Wear old cloths, gloves, safety mask and a cap.

Step 4 – Ready the Paint, Primer, Brush and Roller

Primer provides a smooth, even surface for paint to adhere and covers imperfections and blemishes. Apply the primer with the roller and fill in the corners with a small roller or a paint brush. Ready the paint according to instructions on the package. Mix the paint and primer thoroughly before application.

Step 5 – Paint the Room

The use of a high-quality paint roller with an extended handle considerably eases the painting process. Dip the roller in the paint tray and cover it completely with paint. Start a few inches away from the ceiling and sides of the wall. Go over the walls from side to side or in zigzag motions, making sure there are no overlaps or thick buildups of paint between sections. Cover the entire wall and then fill in the edges with a small roller or a brush. Once the first coat of paint has dried, apply new coats till you achieve the perfect finish.
