How to Properly Clean Upholstery How to Properly Clean Upholstery

What You'll Need
Vacuum cleaner with brush attachment
Foam upholstery spray cleaner
White rags

Upholstery adds warmth to your room by introducing texture and color to furniture and windows. To keep your upholstery in top condition you'll want to know how to properly clean it. Here are some easy steps to keep your upholstered items looking fresh and new.

Step 1 - Vacuum

It is important to vacuum your upholstered items on a weekly basis. This will keep dust and debris from settling into the weave, which will be harder to remove later, especially if it is used a lot, such as a chair. Using your brush attachment, vacuum all of your upholstery, including window treatments.

Step 2 - Spot Clean

To clean spots that you may have missed at the time they happened, use a damp white rag. Only use water and dab the spot to see if it will lift out. Be careful not to rub or it may hurt the fibers of your upholstery. If this doesn’t take the spot out, you can try again if it does not come out with overall cleaning.

 Step 3 - Overall Cleaning

For your upholstered furniture, first test the spray upholstery cleaner in an inconspicuous spot to test for colorfastness. Allow it to completely dry to check to be sure that it will work for your particular type of fabric. If it works, you can evenly coat the piece with the foam cleaner and follow the directions on the can. After cleaning, check again for spots to be sure they came up. If not, spot clean using the same dabbing method above using a small amount of the foam cleaner. Allow to air dry.
