Popcorn ceiling texture has grown out of favor with homeowners and decorators. Many people want to remove it from their homes in favor of a traditional smooth ceiling. There are a few steps you should take to protect your walls during this job.
Step 1: Remove All Furniture
Removing popcorn ceiling texture is a wet, messy job. Remove all of the furniture from the room and cover any furniture you can't remove. Remove all pictures from walls.
Step 2: Protect the Walls
Popcorn ceiling texture has to be wet to be removed. You then use a scraper to remove it from the ceiling which means it will be flying around and can stick to clean walls and adhere when its dry. It could also leave a stain on the paint. Cover the walls from the ceiling corner down. Put up drop cloths, light weight plastic cloths are recommended, and use duct tape to put them in place. As you go around the room, overlap the drop cloths a few inches and tape the seams shut so they can't fly open. Also be sure to cover the floor.
