How to Remove 1 Glass Pane from a Double Pane Sliding Door How to Remove 1 Glass Pane from a Double Pane Sliding Door
Whenever you have a glass pane that you need to remove from your double pane sliding door, there are a handful of things that you will need to keep in mind. Many people will end up opting to purchase an entirely new door. This is wasteful, pricey and overall unnecessary. This is why you will need to make sure that you take the time to figure out another method that will save you some money and prevent you from having to uninstall and install sliding glass doors. Just make sure that you follow the instructions carefully and that you have the necessary tools or the job will not be an easy one.
Step 1 – Prepare the Area
The first thing that you are going to have to do is get a tarp laid down underneath the area where you will be working. Make sure that you have it where you will be cutting the glass so that you won’t have to worry about there being any areas where glass can be left to be stepped on later. Once you have the area prepared, prepare yourself by putting on protective eyewear and gloves. Whenever you are working with glass you can never be too cautious.
Step 2 – Pick out Area
Once you and the area are prepared for the threat of broken glass you are now ready to get an area picked out on the door where you want to begin. Once you have picked a spot you will need to place the back of your hammer against it and tap on it until it begins to crack. After you have one crack you can begin to pry out the smaller pieces of the glass. You will need to do this slowly and carefully. Even though you have a tarp laid down you still don’t want to get too much glass strewn about the floor.
Step 3 – Cut Glass
You will now need to get out your glass cutters so that you can get through those thicker pieces of glass. This will take some time so don’t rush yourself. Make sure that you have all of the larger pieces of glass taken out and look out for small splinters of glass that could get embedded into the skin.
Step 4 – Finish Removing Glass
With your gloves on you can begin to pry out the larger chunks of glass using your hands. As you do this you can put them into a pile next to you. It is best if you use a bucket for this task so that the glass is out of the way whenever you are finished with it. As you are pulling out the glass with your hands make an effort to take out as much of the putty as you can along with the glass. Do this slowly and carefully so that you do not do any damage to the pane of glass you wish to keep in place.
