How to Remove a Patio Door Lock

What You'll Need
Tape Measure

If your patio door lock doesn’t secure the door in place or seems difficult to operate, you might have to replace it with a new door lock.

Step 1- Removing Handles

Examine the door lock and locate the two screws that secure the handles to the door. Use the screwdriver to loosen these screws and detach the handles from the lock. Make sure you support the handles as they are removed.

Step 2- Loosening the Door Latch

Next, locate the door latch screws and loosen them. After these screws come off, measure the thickness of the door in order to purchase a new lock of the ideal size.

Step 3- Finding a Replacement

Since door locks are available in a variety of sizes, take your old locking mechanism with you when shopping for a new lock. You may not be able to open up package in the store to determine if it’s an exact match. Refer to your door thickness measurements and compare this against the dimensions listed on the box.

Bear in mind that the procedure used to repair mortise locks is different and you should obtain the appropriate instructions before carrying out the task yourself.
