How to Remove an Emergency Door Lock Release

An emergency door lock release takes away your worries of children or elderly people getting accidentally locked inside a bathroom, or any other room in the house.

There are different types of emergency lock releases provided on locks. In some cases. when you want to quickly enter the locked room, you have to only give a forceful push, and that will open the door. There are other doors where you have to work on the emergency lock release to open the door.

In a rim type lock, emergency release is provided on the lock. It is operated by a screw driver. There is a slot in the release. When release is rotated, the rod attached to the release operates to open the lock, if you need to open the door without keys.

Step 1: Removing the Lock from Door

Remove the lock from the door, by unscrewing the screws. If required, remove the door knobs prior to that.

Step 2: Opening the Lock Release Cover

Remove the 2 screws that hold the round cover plate of the emergency release bar, on the lock's lower side.

Step 3: Removing the Lock Release

Pull out the emergency release bar from its slot. Use pliers to pull it out.

Step 4: Reinstalling the Lock

Replace the rim lock in the door, in its previous position. Fix it with the screws you removed.
