How to Remove Broken Plate Glass How to Remove Broken Plate Glass

When plate glass breaks, cleaning up and removing the pieces can be dangerous. You can prevent injuries by following these simple steps.

Safety First

First, put on leather gloves and safety glasses. Safety goggles are a good idea as well. This way shards can not injure your eye while you clean it up.

Tape Up  and Pad the Broken Glass

Cut duct or masking tape into long strips. Place several strips of tape in an “X” pattern from corner to corner across the glass, then along the broken glass cracks. For extra strength, overlap with more “X” patterns.

Use cardboard or folded newspapers to make a padding over the glass. Adding this padding will serve as a protective layer should the glass cut through the tape when it is removed from the frame. Carefully remove the glass frame using a screwdriver or pair of pliers. Watch for broken pieces to fall out of the frame, however the larger pieces should remain in place.

Disposal and Clean-Up

Remove and safely dispose of the large pieces. Use strips of tape to pick up any shards or slivers on the floor and any other surfaces and then vacuum the area. Finish up by using a damp cloth or sponge on the affected surfaces and launder any fabrics that may contain small particles of the mirror. Taking the extra measures to be safe in handling broken glass could save you a trip to the ER.
