How to Remove Debris from Your Car's Air Intake How to Remove Debris from Your Car's Air Intake

What You'll Need
Replacement filter
Wrench
Paper Towel
Cleaner
Gloves

The air intake system draws cold air into the car from outside. As the air outside can be full of bugs and debris, the air filter is often fitted inside the air intake system in order to prevent debris from getting inside the car. If you wish to remove debris from the air intake, then you will need to change the filter covering. This is easily done in a few simple steps.

Step 1 - Find and Remove the Old Filter

First, put in protective gloves, and then locate your engine's air intake tube. You should be looking for a long pipe. Close to this long pipe should be the air filter box, which contains your filter. The pipe and housing will usually be solid black. Take your wrench, and gently unscrew the retainer. You should now be able to take hold of the filter. Shake it lightly, and if dust flies off, the filter will need changing.

Step 2 - Clean the Air Filter Box

Once the filter is removed, wipe down the inside of the box with a towel and some cleaning fluid. Remove any large pieces of debris by hand. Allow the box to dry thoroughly, and then install a new air filter. Tighten the box closed by screwing the retainer clip or screw with your wrench.
