How to Remove Gum from Shoes with Peanut Butter How to Remove Gum from Shoes with Peanut Butter
It can be aggravating to look down and realize that you have gum stuck to the bottom of your shoe. Although the newly acquired shoe attachment is gross and sticky, it is not a reason to become flustered or upset. By following these few easy steps, you can use peanut butter to remove the gum from your shoe and set them back to their previous state.
Step 1 - Create a Working Area
Create a working area before you begin. Start by laying out a piece of newspaper on the floor or table. The newspaper will help keep your area clean and cut down your cleanup time when you are finished. Once the newspaper is laid out, set out your materials and the gummed shoe so they are all within arms reach of your working space.
Prepare your peanut butter by scooping about 5 teaspoons into the bowl. You want to make sure you have enough peanut butter to completely cover all of the gum on the shoe. By putting the peanut butter into the bowl, you are allowing yourself to get more if needed without having to ruin your remaining peanut butter by dipping the knife back into the peanut butter jar after it has touched the bottom of your shoe.
Step 2 – Apply the Peanut Butter
You do not want chunky peanut butter with bits of nuts in it for this project, so check and make sure you have smooth peanut butter. Now, using your butter knife, get about 2 teaspoons of peanut butter onto the knife and apply directly over the gum. You want to spread the peanut butter in a think layer, evenly over all of the gum. Make sure all of the gum is covered by peanut butter or that gum will not come off later in the process.
Step 3 – Wait
After applying the peanut butter, you need to leave it on the shoe and allow it to set for 5 to 10 minutes.
Step 4 – Brush Off the Gum
Now you are ready to use the wire brush to remove the gum from the shoe. You are using the wire brush as a scrubber to loosen the gum from the shoe. When scrubbing the shoe, make sure you are scrubbing into or with the grooves on the bottom of the shoe and not against them. Continue to scrub the shoe with the brush until the brush has picked up the peanut butter and the gum. The peanut butter will be absorbed up and into the bristles of the brush, also pulling up the gum from the bottom of the shoe.
Step 5 – Wash Shoe
Now that most all of the peanut butter has been removed, you can move to the sink. Run cold water over the shoe and scrub the shoe with the toothbrush. The cold water will harden any remaining gum and the toothbrush will remove the remaining gum and clean the remaining peanut butter from the bottom of the shoe.
