How to Remove Smoke Damage From a Kitchen Ceiling Fan How to Remove Smoke Damage From a Kitchen Ceiling Fan

What You'll Need
Rubber gloves
Hot water

Removing smoke damage from a kitchen ceiling fan can be a very messy job, but one that you can do yourself with the proper products and tools.

Step 1 - Remove the Paddles

The ceiling fan blades or paddles can easily be removed for cleaning. This is a job that is better done at a counter rather than standing on a ladder. However you will have to use a ladder to remove the blades. Using your screwdriver, unscrew the blades from the metal brackets that hold them onto the fan. Put the screws in a safe place or stick them on a piece of duct tape to keep track of them.

While you are up on the ladder, use the rags to wipe away the smoke damage which is normally a dark film. Spray a bit of degreaser on the rag and wipe the blackened film away. This may take a bit of work and several attempts.

Step 2 - Cleaning the Paddles

Lay the paddles on a smooth surface and spray on some degreaser. Let it sit for a few minutes then rub away with a clean cloth. You may have to repeat this several times as blackening from smoke can be hard to remove. Be careful not to press to hard as the blades can snap.

When the paddles are clean, screw them back into the brackets on the fan that hold them and tighten the screws.
