Wood shingles can give your home a beautiful and rustic feel, but require regular maintenance. Because of wood's sensitivity to wind, rain and sun, wood shingles often warp and need to be replaced. Whether you need to replace a few shingles, or the entire roof, you can save money by removing the wood shingles yourself.
Safety cannot be stressed enough when working on a roof. Make sure you use a sturdy ladder and do a few laps around the roof to practice your balance. It might help if you have someone assist you, holding the ladder.
Remove the Nails
Removing the nails is the only hard part about removing wood shingles. You simple need to use a nail ripper to pull up the nails from the roof. Some shingles will require that you pull the nails completely out; others only need you to help them along.
Pull and Remove Shingles
After you use the nail ripper, you simply need to pull up the shingle and throw it into a trash receptacle. Be sure to keep track of all of the nails; you do not want random nails lying around on your roof.
