How to Repair a Broken Garage Door Opener Chain How to Repair a Broken Garage Door Opener Chain
A garage door opener chain may make a lot of noise when you pull it to open your door but it is one of the most reliable types of door openers ever invented. For many generations, people rely on this type of door opener not only because it is easy to use but also because it is cheap and can easily be repaired when broken.
From time to time, your door opener chain will need adjustments and general maintenance. If your chain is old, it may stall and breakdown while in use. To repair your broken garage door opener chain, here is what you should do.
Step 1 – Diagnose the Problem
Before you do any repairs, you need to know what is wrong with your door opener chain. To do this, open and close the garage door several times using the chain door opener and observe the performance of your opener. If the door stalls or get stuck while you are closing or opening it, the problem could be on the chain itself, on the carriage assembly or on the motor driving the opener. To isolate the possible problems on your door, close the door firmly and unplug the motor. After unplugging the motor, manually pull the chain and check for corrosion. Next, you need to inspect the carriage assembly of your door opener and see if the nuts are in their right places. After that, check the wiring system of your motor and make sure that you are generating enough power to open and close your garage door.
Step 2 – Clean the Chain
If the chain on your garage door is rusty, you need to apply lubricant into it to loosen the corrosion. To do this, put some lubricant on a piece of rag this use the rag to wipe the chain. If your chain is badly corroded, you may need to remove the chain from the carriage assembly and soak it in lubricant for a few hours. Soaking the chain in lubricant for a few hours will help loosen the rust. After soaking the chain, use a rag to wipe the loose corrosion off the chain.
Step 3 – Fix the Carriage Assembly
If your chain is rusty, there is a big possibility that portions of the carriage assembly where the chain passes through may also be rusty. To deal with the rust, pour some lubricant on these areas and let the lubricant stand for a few hours.
When reinstalling the chain into the carriage assembly, use a step ladder to reach the head of the assembly. You need to adjust the chain to make sure that it functions properly. In most types of carriage assemblies for door chain openers, the adjustment bolt is located inside the carriage assembly. The adjustment bolt is held in place by nuts located on the sides of the assembly. You need to loosen the bolts located near the motor and squeeze the nut located on the opposite end to tighten the chain.
Step 4 – Reconnect the Motor
Reconnect the motor to the door chain opener then test your door by opening and closing it a few times.
