How to Repair a Leaking Roof
A leaking roof can wreak havoc to your house. When water leaks from your roof it can affect the integrity of your house including your electrical wiring. You can repair a leaky roof by using a roofing patch that you can purchase at any home improvement depot. Below are the materials that you need along with the instructions on how to repair a leaking roof.
Step 1-Examine your Roof
The first step is to determine the location of the leak on the roof so that you can plan your approach. With a pair of binoculars, position yourself on higher ground or climb a tree and thoroughly examine your roof. Look for signs of rotting, tearing and cracking. After determining where the probable causes of the leak are, climb on the roof with a ladder. Bring along with you some old bricks that you can put on top of the troubled areas of your roof to serve as markings.
Step2-Use Flat-Soled Shoes
Wear flat-soled shows to avoid damaging your roof even more as you walk around to mark the troubled spots on your roof with the old bricks. As you get a closer look on your roof you will be able to see cracks, tears and rotten areas which you have not seen with the binoculars. Mark these areas with the old bricks as well.
Step 3-Inspect your Attic
Climb down from the roof and go to your attic. Inspect the attic with a flashlight for any signs of water stain on the attic floor. Take note of the roof area directly above the water stain.
Step 4-Apply Roof Patch
Acquire a commercial roof patch at a home improvement depot. Climb on the roof again using the ladder and begin applying the roof patch to the nearest mark you made earlier in step 1 and 2. Before you apply the roof patch make sure to clean the troubled area from debris and dirt using a metal brush. Use a trowel to apply an abundant amount of roof patch on the troubled area. Proceed with patching up the rest of the troubled areas on your roof. Work methodically to make sure that you do not miss a marker.
If you are repairing your leaky roof during the rainy season make sure to use a roof patch that works on wet surfaces. Proceed with patching up the rest of the troubled areas on your roof with the roof patch.
When it comes to repairing your leaking roof, the most important thing to consider is your safety. Never repair your leaking roof when it rains or there are nearby thunderstorms. Tread carefully on the roof when you are doing your repair and never walk on a roof area that shows any sign of rotting. Crawl instead of walk to reach the leaks that are located on hard-to-reach roof areas. Before you use the ladder to climb up the roof, make sure that the ladder is secured firmly on the ground.
