An aluminum storm window is a very common sight among homes in the northern areas of the country. They help to ward off some of the harsher weather while sealing off the cold from the heat inside. These windows will require little maintenance for several years. There does come a time when the latches will be worn out and you will need to replace them.

Step 1: Make Sure Latches Are Available

One of the problems with a lot of aluminum storm window latches is that there are many models that are not being manufactured anymore. Before you start taking apart your window make sure you can get the latches you need.

Step 2: Remove Storm Window Insert

In order to get to the latch that is on your aluminum storm window you will need to take it apart. Remove the window from the case it is held in.

Step 3: Disassemble Bottom of Storm Window

The storm window is crimped together on the corners. To release this you will need to tap the bottom of the frame very carefully with a chisel and hammer.

Step 4: Replace Latches

Once the first corner is about an 1/8 inch separated, pull the other side apart. Once you can get to the latch, replace it with a new one.

Step 5: Put Window Back

After the latch is replaced, crimp the sides back together again with a nail set and place back in window frame.
