How to Repair Concrete with a Vinyl Concrete Patch How to Repair Concrete with a Vinyl Concrete Patch

What You'll Need
Chisel
Vacuum
Water Hose
Vinyl Patch Compound
Trowel
Wooden Float

By using a concrete patch you can quickly repair a crack in their concrete wall or floor. Concrete is used in a lot of different building application because it is very strong, easy to work with, and can last for many years. There are times when concrete will crack because of expansion or settling. Sometimes this is worked into the design. However, there are times when the crack needs to be repaired because of aesthetics or function. A vinyl concrete patch is a self adhering, quick-drying patch that anyone can use to repair their cracked concrete wall or floor.

Step 1: Clean Debris Away from Crack

Before you apply any type of vinyl concrete patch to the crack in the wall, or the floor, you should make sure that the area is clear of any debris. Use a chisel and break apart any loose pieces and remove them from the crack in the concrete. Make sure to remove any pieces that are lodged in the crack itself.

Step 2: Vacuum Concrete

After all of the pieces of concrete have been removed, run a shop vac over the surface of the concrete where the patch will go. This will get rid of all the dust and the dirt that is in or around the crack. The area should be free of any small particles for the vinyl concrete patch to adhere correctly.

Step 3: Moisten Area with Hose

Before the vinyl concrete patch is placed onto the area it will need to be moistened a little. Use a hose and wet the area a little. Do not soak it or leave any puddles of water.

Step 4: Mix Vinyl Patch

Use a small bucket and mix just enough of the vinyl concrete patch that you can use within 30 minutes. Do not mix a large amount of it or it will dry before you use it all.

Step 5: Apply Patch to Cement

With a small amount on a trowel spread the patch over the crack. Make sure that the vinyl concrete patch fills the entire area of the crack.

Step 6: Smooth Out Cement Patch

You should use enough of the concrete patch to not only fill the area that is cracked, but also use to smooth it out along the adjoining surface area. Use a wood concrete float and smooth the patch out onto the concrete surface. You should go at least 4 inches past the crack on each side for a level surface without any seams.

Step 7: Use Small Patch for Quick Repairs

For small cracks in the concrete you can use a small tube of ready-made vinyl concrete patch. This is in a tube that can be used in a caulking gun or that is squeezed out by hand. Start applying the this type of concrete patch at the top of the crack and work your way down to the end. Make sure that the entire crack is full of the concrete patch. Use a small plastic scraper to smooth it out.
