When needing to repair overlay hinges there are a few things that you should keep in mind. Many people will opt to simply replace them when they could just as easily have repaired them. Make sure that you understand how the repair process works to save yourself some money and time.

Step 1 – Check Alignment

The first thing that you will need to do is make sure that the hinges are properly aligned. If they are not, then they will often cause you problems when you try to open or close the door. If they are not aligned properly, then you are going to have to loosen them and adjust them to the point where they are aligned properly.

Step 2 – Tighten Hardware

There will be two screws for these hinges that you will need to be familiar with whenever you are tightening your hardware. The screw that is in the front will move the door side to side. The screw on the back will move your door in and out. Like the process of replacing a lock, you'll need your Phillips screwdriver to tighten it properly. It is commonly your back screw that is going to cause the alignment of your door to be off. If the door feels loose then it is usually the back screw.
