As an alternative to the old type of sheet metal bumpers, the latest cars conceal their metal bumper below a plastic fascia to make sure that small abrasions could show up readily. If your automobile receives major injuries to its bumper such as ripping, bending, or crushing it will require repairs.
On the positive side of it, there is plastic repair and finishing material easily available from auto stores. This material can be used easily to repair the fascia. The process of repairing a damaged bumper plastic fascia comprises operations like grinding, sanding, molding and painting. The cost of repairing yourself will be much less. Repairing a bumper is labor intensive, but you can save a lot of money by doing it yourself in easy steps:
Step 1: Cleaning the Surface
Wash the bumper using a white scrub and a grease remover. Remove all plastic burrs from the holes and the cracks with the help of a carbide burr. Remove all the snags from the surface of bumper. Use 80-grit sandpaper to sand the surface. Blow off all the debris and sanding dust from the surface of bumper with a nozzle attached to the air compressor.
Step 2: Repairing the Flaws
Keep the bumper with its back facing up. Repair the cracks with the help of a plastic repair and reinforcing tape. Fix the tape on the backside of all holes. Rub all damaged portions with 24-grit sandpaper. Clean the surface by blowing all debris with compressed air. Next, apply a thick coat of adhesion promoter over the damaged areas with a sprayer. Let it stay for about 10- 15 minutes
Step 3: Reinforcing the Damaged Areas
Cut the pieces of wire mesh with wire cutter about two inches longer than the damaged area to cover it. Apply the bonding adhesive on the backside of damaged portion with a putty knife and place the piece of wire mesh into it. Coat one more layer of adhesive on wire mesh. Ensure that the wire mesh is firmly held in its place until the adhesive sets and dries. It may require nearly 45-50 minutes.
Step 4: Filing up the Surface Dips
Sand the depression on the damaged surface with 24 grit sandpaper. Clean the dust by blowing it off. Paint a layer of adhesion promoter on the dip. Allow it to dry for about ten minutes. Fill the dip with body filler using a putty knife so that the air bubbles out. Mend the surface with the knife to blend with and take shape of bumper’s contour. Allow the filler to dry completely. Smooth the surface by sanding the filler and again blow of the sanding dust.
Step 5: Applying Sealer Coat
Spray a coat of flexible bumper sealer to seal the repaired surface. Allow the sealer to dry for about half an hour. Spray a layer of textured bumper spray and let it dry completely. It may take about 30 minutes.
Step 6: Coating Primer
Spray a thick coat of primer over the front face of the bumper. Use a flexible bumper primer. This will ensure proper adhesion of the paint on the surface. Allow the primer to dry completely for about 45 minutes.
Step 7: Painting the Bumper
Paint the bumper using a sprayer with a thin coat of paint of the final color. Allow the paint to dry for about 45 minutes. Wet sand the painted surface with a 320-grit sandpaper or sanding pad to make it smooth. Wash the surface to remove the sanding dust and debris. Allow the surface to dry completely. Again, spray a layer of paint and repeat the process 4 to 5 times. Use 400-grit sandpaper on the last coat before final coat. Spray a thin final coat of paint and do not sand. Let the paint dry completely overnight.
