How to Repair Wooden Shelf Brackets How to Repair Wooden Shelf Brackets

What You'll Need
120-grit sandpaper
Cordless drill or screwdriver with screw tip
1/16 inch drill bit

When your wooden shelf brackets need replacing, all you need are a few tools and a little know-how.The four steps below will get you through the task.

Step 1: Draw a Pattern

You’re not going to want anything plain, so draw something out to use as a pattern. Using a sharp pencil, trace this onto the wood you’ll be using. Turn it over to make the mirror image for one side.

Step 2: Cut and Finish the Wood

Use a jigsaw to cut the wood along your lines. Sand using 120-grit paper until smooth. Apply stain, varnish, lacquer or paint as desired.

Step 3: Replace the Brackets

Remove everything from the affected shelves. Take the shelf off the bracket. Use it as a template and drill pilot holes for the mounting screws. Remove the old brackets from the wall. Secure the new brackets to the wall, using new anchors if required.

Step 4: Replace the Shelf

Place the shelf back on the brackets and replace the screws holding it to the brackets. Repeat as necessary.
