Having the ability to replace bathroom sink pipes can be greatly useful when you unexpectedly find water all over your floor. By following a few steps to undertake repair, you can negate the need for a plumber and save money.
Step 1 – Preparation
To replace bathroom sink parts, you must begin the process by gathering all the equipment required and preparing the area. Examine the existing pipe and make a note of the size and all the fasteners required; though the new pipe should comprise all the fasteners required, make sure that this is the case. If you are not sure of exactly what point in the pipe the leak is coming from or the severity of it, place a bucket below the pipe to catch any traces of water. In addition, lay out an old sheet or some newspaper in case of any spillage.
Step 2 – Remove Nuts
To prevent the pipe wrench slipping out of place as you replace bathroom sink J-bend pipe, use a rag to wipe the pipe to remove any traces of water. There are two nuts that need to be removed and you should start with the front one by positioning the pipe wrench on the nut, use a pair of rubber gloves if you need more traction. The nut will usually need to be turned to the left to loosen it and you should grip the handle of the wrench firmly in order to do this. Once the nut is sufficiently loose, remove the wrench and continue to unscrew the nut by hand. After this, follow the same procedure with the nut at the rear of the pipe.
Step 3 – Remove Pipe
Even with the nuts removed, to replace bathroom sink J-bend pipe may still require a little pressure to free it completely. Firmly grip both ends of the pipe and pull it from its holding before setting it aside.
Step 4 – Check Gaskets
A leaking pipe can often be the result of worn or broken gaskets, so check these to determine the condition of them. Similarly, if your new pipe did not come with any fasteners, examine the existing nuts for signs of any damage so that you can work out whether they can be reused. If the need for a replacement pipe has only arisen due to a split or defect to the main body of the pipe, it is likely to be possible to reuse the fasteners. Where there are defects present, use replacements.
Step 5 – Install New Pipe
Position the nuts and gaskets on the ends of the new pipe before holding it in place as you align the screw threads by hand. The process of turning the nuts to secure them should initially be undertaken by hand and continued until it is too difficult to continue. Finish off by tightening them with a pipe wrench. Complete the process to replace bathroom sink pipe by running the faucet and ensuring that there are no leaks present.
