A door lever is something that may pass unnoticed, but one has to appreciate the fact that it is one of the most fundamental components that comprise a door. There are several types of door levers and doorknobs in various shapes, styles, sizes, and colors. This will depend on the type of room the door leads to. Doorknobs tend to be more traditional in style than door levers. If one wishes to change from one to the other it is a task which may be done as a do-it-yourself job, so it is a good thing to gain basic insight on how to go about it.

Step 1 - Purchase the Doorknob

Decide what type of doorknob you wish to install. Visit stores that supply these accessories to get an idea of what styles, shapes, and colors are available, together with the price range. Select a hard-wearing doorknob that can be both decorative and durable.

Step 2 - Remove the Door Lever

At this point you can start working on removing the door lever from your door. Using a screwdriver, you will need to work on the interior side of the door in order to remove the screws which fix it to it. Once all the screws have been removed, you should easily pull it off.

Step 3 - Uninstall the Latch

Your next step is to remove the latch previously installed with the door lever and any other related fixtures.

Step 4 - Start Installing the Doorknob

Now you need to install the newly bought doorknob. Start by placing it in the hole that held your old door lever and then you just have to fix the underlying base for the doorknob. This should have small holes where the screws will then be fixed into.

Step 5 - Align the Other Part

Align the other part of the doorknob on the other side of the door so that the screws which you will insert will go through the corresponding holes.

Step 6 - Insert the Screws and Tighten Them

At this point you have to insert the screws and then tighten them up well with a screwdriver so that the doorknob will be affixed securely to the door. It is important to fix it tightly so that it will not start moving at the slightest touch or turn when one uses it to open or close the door. However, do not over tighten the screws as they may have too much tension and break, while also possibly causing damage to the door itself.

Step 7 - Fix the Latch

Once your doorknob is secured, you now need to fix the latch which comes as an accessory to the doorknob. Make sure you install it properly on the area in the door frame.

Step 8 - Test

At this point you are ready. You just need to check that the doorknob turns properly and that when you close the door it operates as it should with regards to the latch mechanism.
