A furnace damper would be the feature fitted in your furnace, where the ductwork passes through the fire curtains. It is best described as a fire control feature. Furnace dampers come with an access door in the adjacent ductwork that allows for resetting and inspection. They are usually held open by fusible links and when subjected to heat, these links fracture and a spring allows the damper to close. Because these links are manually attached, the dampers can be accessed easily and in turn are capable of replacement.
It should be noted that modern furnaces come equipped with four dampers. In this case, we will look at a standard procedure of replacing a typical furnace damper.
Step 1 - Clean the Ductwork
It is necessary to clean the ductwork before you begin. Ensure that the furnace is cool enough, or turned off, depending on your furnace type before you engage in the process. Throw out any charred wood and ashes and use a soft brush or cloth and water to clean out the ductwork. Refer to the specifications and instructions of the manufacturer from whom you bought your furnace.
Step 2 - Measure the Duct
Use the tape measure to measure out the diameter of the duct because this will determine the right fit for your new damper. Purchase your damper according to these specifications, keeping in mind that dampers are designed in a variety of models to meet various temperature control needs.
Step 3 - Remove Old Damper
Use a wrench to remove your old furnace damper. This will depend on the manner in which your damper is attached to the ductwork because various fire dampers are installed in various ways. Some furnace dampers are held in place by a rod and at least four bolts or screws. In this case, use the screwdriver to remove them and slide out the damper from the rod.
Step 4 - Install New Damper
This is a reversal of the above step. Slide in the new damper into the rod and use the screwdriver to fasten the screws or bolts back into place. If your furnace operates electrically, make sure that the amperage to power supply is configured correctly when you connect.
Step 5 - Adjust the Damper
Adjust your damper accordingly, that is according to the direction you want it to face or specifications of the damper itself. For instance, smoke pipe dampers are kept as nearly closed as possible. It should be noted that these distances can only be determined via trial and error until the furnace functions properly. Keep in mind that the more a furnace damper is closed, the more fuel you will save. All tools and materials usually come with the purchase of your new damper. Request this from your retailer if this is not the case.
