How to Replace a Magnetic Door Stop How to Replace a Magnetic Door Stop

What You'll Need
Replacement Set

When replacing a magnetic door stop, you must take care both when removing the original stop and when installing the new one. When removing the device, you must also preserve the finish to avoid working on the damages after the replacement process. After the removal, it is also important to follow correct installation procedures as well. Follow the simple steps below to effectively complete this project.

Step 1 – Removing the Old Magnetic Door Stop

There are 2 parts of the magnetic door stop that needs to be removed in order to make way for the replacement set. When replacing, you can use either the same type of set as the previously installed one (this makes replacement procedure a lot easier) or a new and better type of set.

First, locate the screws on the catch assembly found usually on the door edge at the bottom part of the door. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws until they come off. Remove the entire catch assembly and put them aside. Next, work on the magnetic door stop installed on the wall trim. Remove the screws, pull off the device and set it aside.

When removing the screws, make sure not to make the screw holes a lot larger or there will be problems mounting the replacement.

Step 2 – Installing the Replacement Set

When installing the same type of door stop, the installation procedure is quite simple because it only requires mounting both the new catch assembly and door stop on the readily available slots by tightening the screws provided. When installing a new door stop, work on the catch assembly first.

Detach the mounting plate from the catch assembly by using a screwdriver. Position the mounting plate on the door and mark where the screws will be inserted. Drill the holes and screw the mounting plate onto the door. Assemble the parts of the catch assembly according to the manufacturer’s instructions printed on the product description. Afterwards, press it against the plate in a clockwise motion until both are connected.

Now work on the door stop by removing the mounting plate first. Position the mounting plate on the wall trim. Determine where the screws will be inserted and drill holes into them. Notice that there is also a base plate screw that comes with the door stop set. Check the product description to determine where it will be inserted. This screw will be used to connect the body of the doors stop to the plate to be mounted on the trim.

After inserting this screw into the plate, position the plate onto the wall trim, insert the mounting screws and tighten them. Notice that the base plate screw threads will be facing away from the plate.  Insert the body of the door stop into this screw and turn it clockwise to tighten. When the installation is complete, test the door stop and check for any loose screws.
