How to Replace a Shower Door Seal
A shower door seal is an important structure designed to keep the water inside the shower and prevent it from leaking outside to the other parts of the home. Since water can damage other building materials, it is important to ensure that the water stays in the shower to prevent any damage caused by shower water leakage. Over time, the seal may wear off due to a variety of reasons. The adhesive may become too loose to support the seal, therefore causing the seal to get damaged as well. When the shower door seal gets damaged, you must replace it with a new one to prevent leakage. Follow the simple steps below to effectively complete this project.
Step 1 – Removing the Old Seal
Inspect the old seal for parts that are coming off the door. The seal can be removed easily by working on the already damaged portions. Simply pull off the seal slowly until it comes off completely off the door. If the seal has been bonded to the door quite strongly, then perhaps a putty knife may help remove the bond. When using the putty knife, make sure not to push too much so as not to scratch or harm the door.
Step 2 – Removing the Adhesive
You must remove the adhesive that bonded the old seal to the door to give way to the new seal. To remove the adhesive, use any adhesive removing product available or isopropyl alcohol or acetone. Dip a clean cloth or rag in the solvent and use it to wipe off the adhesive. If the adhesive will still not go away, try using a warm water and detergent. Before installing the new seal, allow the area to dry completely.
Step 3 – Installing the Replacement
Try to fit the new seal onto the door to see if it conforms to the dimensions. Cut the seal as needed until the correct fit is achieved. Check the product if it already has a back portion with adhesive. If it does, simply remove the adhesive cover and press the seal onto the surface of the door starting from one point of the door to the other point until every side and corner has been sealed.
If the seal is not pre-glued, then it has to be bonded to the door using a glue or adhesive. The best way to seal bond the seal is to use silicone caulk. Run the silicone all around the door and press the seal onto the caulk. Make sure that the seal is pressed firmly leaving no room for air. Some of the silicone will ooze out at the sides of the seal. Clean them with a wet cloth and allow the adhesive to dry. It may take at least 36 hours before it cures completely.
