How to Replace a Vessel Sink Bowl Part 1

A vessel sink bowl is a bowl that sits on top of a countertop surface as opposed to below it. This gives the sink a very unique look. There are a few things that you will have to do differently whenever you are working with these specific types of bowls. When replacing one, for instance, you will find that the steps that you will have to take will differ from those that you would with a regular sink bowl removal.

Step 1 – Drain Removal

For the removal of your drain, you will need to find the nut that will attach to the P trap. Set a bowl down so that you will be able to catch the water that falls from the trap once the nut has been loosened. The P trap will be very close to the faucet. Once you have loosened the nut, you will need to pull down on the P trap to remove it. You will need to loosen the screws that are directly below the drain. It is a good idea to wipe off any debris before you do this. Use caution whenever you are removing the nut as applying too much pressure can break it.

Step 2 – Faucet Disconnection

In order to remove the faucet you will first have to disconnect it. To do this, you will need to first get your wrench and turn the pipes counterclockwise until they are loosened. Once the pipes have been completely loosened you will be able to take out the faucet from the sink.

Step 3 – Sink Removal

Once you have the drain and the faucet removed, you are ready to completely remove the sink. If there is a seal that is around the sink, then you will be able to cut this with a utility knife. You may need to use a small crowbar if the sink is having trouble moving. It is a good idea to have someone there to help you whenever you are lifting the sink out. While vessel sinks are not as heavy as regular sinks, they can still be difficult to lift out alone.

Step 4 – Cautions

If you are planning on using the bowl of the sink again or for something else, make sure that you use plenty of caution whenever you are removing. Always make sure that whenever you are removing the sink that you first shut off all of the water supply. Failure to do this could result in you flooding out your bathroom and home. Always have a bucket or a bowl nearby whenever you begin to loosen the fittings to the plumbing. Even though the water is turned off there will still be water in the pipes. This water will come out quickly at first and will steadily begin to drip. It may be a good idea to have more than one bucket or bowl nearby in case there is more water than you were prepared for.
