How to Replace an Old Closet Light Fixture

What You'll Need
Drywall mounts
Wire nuts

If you have an old closet light fixture, then you may want to replace it while you have the opportunity. Replacing an elderly closet light fitting can allow you to add more to the light, including electrical socket attachments, or a switch rather than a light cord. If you want to improve the closet light, then you can easily remove the old one and add a new light by following some simple instructions.

Step 1 - Remove the Old Light

Turn off the electricity at the main circuit breaker of your house. Take off the lampshade, or any other obstructions, and remove the light bulb. Using your screwdriver, unscrew the closet light fitting, and pull it towards you. Behind the fixture will be a series of wire nuts which are holding the wires onto the fixture. Throw the old light away.

Step 2 - Add the New Light

Install the frame for your new closet light. You may have to add some metal cross-bar frames to the closet dry wall in order to keep it secure. Make a few holes around the area of the fitting, and add drywall mounts into the holes using a hammer. Take the wires, and fit them into the back of the new closet light fitting. Screw this onto the wall.
