How to Replace Half Log Siding

Half log siding is a less expensive alternative to building a true log home. This type of siding will give your home the appearance of being a log home without a lot of the heavy labor and expensive costs. Today the half log siding also comes pre cut and ready to install with just a few days of work. Consumers are able to purchase many different kinds of log siding to resemble that of a particular wood that is desired. Any type of siding that is attached to the exterior of a home will need to be repaired at some point in the future. Here are some steps to removing and reinstalling half log siding:

Step 1: Clean Half Log Siding

Anytime there is the need for some log siding repair is it important to clean the surface first. You may only need to do some easy superficial repairs that do not require a lot of work. You will have a better understanding of the work that is needed when you remove any dirt and grime that is the result of the damage. Use a brush with some water and soap.

Step 2: Cut Away Damaged Piece

If there isn't a lot of damage to the log siding, and especially if it is localized to just one or two pieces, you will only need to remove the damaged area. Cut away the damaged pieces with a skill saw that has the blade adjusted to the depth of the siding only.

Step 3: Treat Ends of Log Siding

Since the log siding is made out of real wood you will need to treat any ends that you have to cut before installation. This can be in the form of a water sealer, stain, or primer. However, it is important to take this step before setting the new piece in place.

Step 4: Install With Oly Screws

Oly screws are used for installing logs and half log siding. They are at least 5 inches long and are driven into the center of the log. Pre drill the hole first and then secure to the exterior of the home with a ratchet wrench.

Step 5: Use Shims if Needed

Anytime you make a repair to a piece of log siding you want it to line up with the rest of the siding. You can do this through the use of thin wood shims. Simply drive them into the seam there they are needed.

Step 6: Caulk All Joints

Once the new piece of log siding has been installed in place of the damaged one you need to go over all of the seams and joints with waterproof caulking. Once the bead has been applied, smooth it out with a small scraper or your finger.

Step 7: Match Stain

If the log siding was delivered without any stain finish, you can add the stain after it is installed. This will allow you to better blend in the stain to match the rest of the exterior. Rub it on with a clean rag and work it into the surrounding stain for a smoother blend.
