One of the benefits of owning a sectional garage door is that you can replace only one section if it is damaged. You do not have to worry about are placing the whole door if you back your car into one of the sections and dent it. This can save you a considerable amount of money since you do not have to replace the whole door. The process of replacing a single section will be a lot of work but it can be done. Here are the basics of how to replace one section of a sectional garage door.

Step 1 - Locating a Replacement

In order to replace one of the sections in your sectional garage door, you will need to find a suitable replacement piece. This means that you need to get the exact size that you need and any information that you can find on the door. If you can find a model number and the style, this would be helpful. Use your tape measure to get the exact dimensions of the section. Then go back to the manufacturer and try to get a replacement section.

Step 2 - Removing the Sections

In order to put a new section in, you will first need to remove the damaged one. To do this, you will have to take out all of the panels that are on top of the damaged one as well. Every garage door can be a little bit different when it comes to removing these sections. Most of them are attached to each other with brackets and they fit into a track on the sides.

You will need some help to get the panels out of the track. You can use an electric drill or a wrench to detach the sections from the brackets. You will most likely have to unhook the sections from the side of the track as well. Then you can lift the sections out of the track one at a time.

Step 3 - Insert the New Section

Once you have the sections out of the way, you can install the new one. With help from someone else, feed the wheels on the section into the track on both sides. Then slide the panel down into the garage track until it rests on top of the panel underneath it. If there are additional panels that go on top of that one, you can go ahead and insert them as well.

Step 4 - Attaching the Section

Once you have the section into the track, you can attach it to the section below. You should be able to use an electric drill to attach the brackets to each section. You may need to use a wrench for this part of the project. You may also need to use the drill or wrench to attach the wheels to the track on the sides. Then attach the panel to the sections above as well.
