How to Replace Trim Molding Easily

You may need to replace trim molding as mouldings get weathered because of heavy rains. Replacing job is not a tough one, if you know the steps.

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Trim molding
  • Electric saw
  • Measuring tape
  • Pry bar
  • Hammer
  • Finishing nails
  • Caulking
  • Channel locks
  • Razor knife
  • Protective eyewear

Step 1 – Remove Old Molding

To remove your old trim molding, take your razor knife and slowly run it between the molding and the wall. Select the thinnest pry bar you have with a sharp edge. Work in the pry bar and continue for the length of the molding. Only wiggle the bar, and do not use force. Remove the nails from the old trim molding with the channel locks. Do not tap the nails back through but pull out the nail by pulling it from the long side. This will save your old trim molding and your wall.

Step 2 – Install the New

Measure your trim molding to fit and cut with electrical saw. Lay the trim molding on the wall and nail. Do not nail through old holes as they will not hold the molding. Caulk the space at the top of the molding against the wall. Also, caulk the nail holes to complete the job.

Step 3 – Finishing Touches

Lightly sand the caulking over the nail holes. Also, prime and paint the trim molding.
