Replacing the water supply lines is a procedure that you should perform every few years. As water supply lines age over time, leaks can be formed in the lines. This leaves room for flooding of your home if you’re away on vacation for example. As most people leave the main water supply on and control the water going into the washing machine through the valves of the washing machine, flooding is possible if the pipes leak. Chlorinated water if you’re living in such a city can contribute to the pipes springing a leak too. Use this step-by-step guide to easily replace the water supply lines of your washing machine to prevent any damages caused by flooding. The tools and materials required for the job are given below.
Step 1 – Purchase Replacement Hoses
The first step to perform is to simply go out and buy replacement hoses. You will need to take measurements of your current hoses as knowing the diameter and length will help you find the correct new hose to fit your washing machine supply lines system. Hoses are very cheap and can be bought easily in the market or online, but make sure you get the right length otherwise you will end up with unnecessary bends and curves in your water supply lines. When buying a new hose, make sure you also buy new fitting attachments that are connected at the end of the hose as these will help you prevent any future leaks.
Step 2 – Turn off Water Supply
Before you start replacing your water supply lines, it is imperative that you turn off the main water supply that is feeding water to your washing machine. This will usually be a turn off valve near the area where you operate your washing machine. Turning off the water supply will prevent any mess being created by sudden gushing water when you remove the water supply lines for replacement.
Step 3 – Remove Both Hoses
Usually, there are two hoses providing water to the washing machine. After you have turned off the water supply, remove both the hoses carefully. Make sure you have a bucket placed near your work area. Hoses will have water trapped into them and spilled water can create a mess. Even if your water supply is turned off, a long hose can hold a lot of water. Having a bucket nearby will help you neatly collect any spilled water, preventing you from a time consuming cleaning job.
Step 4 – Install New Hoses
Once your old hoses have been removed, it is easy to install the new hoses now. With the new connectors on the ends of the hose, attach the hose to appropriate water entry parts of the washing machine. Make sure you twist-on the hose onto the washing machine with your hand first. Fixing a hose clamp on each new hose then will help make a tight fit without leaks.
Step 5 – Check for Leaks
After you have attached the new hoses, turn the water back on from the valve to check for any leaks in your water supply lines. Once you have ensured there are no leaks, your job is done!
