How to Replace Windshield Wiper Blades

You need windshield wiper blades to make sure that your windshield remains clear during rain and snow. When your windshield wiper blades begin to go bad, you need to replace them as soon as possible. This is a job that is easily done on your own, without the assistance of a garage or a mechanic. The article below will explain how you remove and replace windshield wiper blades.

Step 1 - Determine Wiper Blade Type

There are three types of windshield wiper blades. The first blade to look for is the hook and slot type. These connect to the blade arm by a folded over tab. Second is a pin type, which connects to the windshield wiper arm in the same fashion as the hook type blade, but with a pin holding it in place. The third is a straight edge blade. These come in two styles. The first is a pin that is pushed in and then the blade slides off the arm. The other requires you to remove screws from the blade and the arm.

Step 2 - Remove the Old Windshield Wiper Blades

Once you have determined which windshield wiper blades you have on your vehicle, you can properly remove and install them. Regardless of the blade type that is installed, pull the blade arm up and away from the windshield. For the hook and slot type, locate the tab and pull it forward. Once the tab is unhooked you can slide the blade off the arm. In order to remove the pin type blade, locate the pin on the blade and arm. Press that pin in and you can slide the wiper blade off the arm. The third type is the hardest to remove. Locate a notch, pin, or tab and use the screwdriver to press it, which will allow you to remove the blade. Some of these windshield wiper blades have tiny screws which you will need to remove before being able to slide the blade off the arm. Measure the length of the blade and go to the auto parts store to purchase the right windshield wiper blades.

Step 3 - Install the Windshield Wiper Blades

With the new blade purchased, you only have to install it. This is much easier than removing them. Take the new windshield wiper blades and line them up with the blade arm so that the blade is against the windshield. Slide the blade down until it cannot go any further. Replace the tab, push the pin in, or replace the screws depending on the particular setup of your car.

Step 4 - Test the New Windshield Wiper Blades

Some wiper blades need to be adjusted, so it is important to test them out. Turn your car on and spray window washer fluid. Start the wiper blades and make sure they brush across the windshield without leaving streaks. Adjust the blades as needed.
