You will find that replacing your wood balusters with wrought iron is a great way to update your home and make it look beautiful. Wrought iron can make your home more aesthetically pleasing and will match almost any décor. You will find that the replacement process is not one that is very difficult with the right tools and know how.

Step 1 - Pick Wrought Iron

Whenever you go to choose the wrought iron that you want, it is a good idea for you to get a photo or a sketch of your staircase. Make sure that the picture or drawing shows where all of the balusters are. You will need to be sure that you know how many balusters you will need so that you will be prepared for the cost. It is on this trip that you will be able to choose the design as well as the color of the wrought iron that you wish to have for your home. It is important that you have shoes for your balusters. Make sure that the shoes that you get are the right ones for the balusters that you choose.

Step 2 - Remove Existing Balusters

After you have your new balusters, it is time to remove the old ones. Make sure that you only cut about ¾ inch through each of your spindles moving towards the middle. You will need to do this so that you can keep your stair spindle from completely falling out. After you have a section cut, you will then need to grab the cut point and pull it in your direction. Once you have removed the cut piece, you will then need to get rid of the broken balusters and use your pliers to get rid of all of the unnecessary nails.

Step 3 - Measure

You are now ready to measure the area where your new balusters will go. Make sure that you add somewhere between 1 inch and 1¼ of an inch to each of your measurements. Once you have the accurate measurements, you are ready to cut each of your spindles to the right length. Make sure that you do so at the bottom.

Step 4 - Put Wrought Iron in Place

Once you have all of the individual balusters cut, you are ready to begin to put them into place. You will put the new baluster into the hole of where the old one was. Once you have the top of it in its hole you will then need to put the shoe at the bottom of it. After they are in place, make sure that you glue both the top and the bottom as well as the shoes with epoxy.

Step 5 - Understand Other Considerations

It is important that you know the requirements that are necessary for your home. If your home is more than 10 years old, then you will need to research all of the requirements that are in your area. Older homes will need to have balusters be a specific distance apart from each other.
