A fireplace screen is not only a practical addition to a fireplace, it can also add charm. If t is rusted or damaged, it will need to be replaced. Here are 4 steps to replacing your fireplace screen.
Step 1 – Detach the Old Screen
Remove the screws or bolts that attach the screen to the fireplace. Slide off the rings that fit over the metal rod that holds the screen to the fireplace.
Step 2 – Measure the Screen
The screen is likely to have deposits of soot on it. To keep the soot from getting on your floor or carpet, lay a piece of plastic or sheets of newspaper on the floor, then lay the screen on the this protective cover. Stretch the screen out to its full width and measure both its height (without the rings) and its width.
Step 3 – Purchase your New Screen
Take you screen measurements with you to a home improvement center and purchase a screen that matches the dimensions of your old screen.
Step 4 – Install the New Screen
Before inserting the rod through the rings, use sandpaper to remove rust from the rod, then oil it to keep it from rusting again. Finally, attach the new screen to your fireplace.
