How to Seal Seams in Linoleum Flooring

When you are installing linoleum flooring, one of the most complicated steps will be dealing with the seams. You need to be sure that you handle the seams correctly when you install the floor or they will continue to come up. If you do not seal the seams, they can curl up and cause a safety hazard. Additionally, they will accumulate dirt and become very noticeable. Follow the simple steps below to effectively seal seams in linoleum flooring.

Step 1 - Get the Seam Sealer

One of the most important parts of the process is getting the right type of seam sealer. There are several different types on the market. Some seam sealers are high gloss while some are dull. You need to get the type that is ideal for your linoleum. If you have a high-gloss linoleum, for example, you need a high-gloss seam sealer.

Generally, the best time to purchase the seam sealer is when you purchase your linoleum. Ask the sales representative what brand or type the manufacturer recommends. In most cases, the same company will have a seam sealer that you can buy.

Step 2 - Straighten Seam

When you are installing the linoleum, you need to make sure that the seams fit perfectly together. If there are any gaps or overlaps in the seam, sealing it will not do much good. You need to have the seam in place before you apply the sealer. To make a smooth seam, overlap the edges of the linoleum a bit, making sure that the pattern is matched up correctly. Then use a very sharp utility knife to cut down through both layers of linoleum at the same time. This will provide a perfect cut on both sides of the linoleum where it meets.

Once you have applied the adhesive under the edges, use a flooring roller on the seam. This will press it down to the floor together so that it will be smooth.

Step 3 - Apply the Sealer

Once the seam in the linoleum is together, you need to apply the sealer. This process is generally very simple as the seam sealer comes with an applicator tip on the bottle. Cut the tip off of the bottle of seam sealer and pour out of the tip.

Start at one end of the seam. Place the tip of the bottle directly on the seam and slowly move across it. Work deliberately so that you do not miss any of the seam. Move fluidly across the entire seam with the sealer, and then review your work. Allow the seam sealer to thoroughly dry on top of the seam. After it dries, if it appears that you have missed any spots, reapply in that area.
