How to Secure Your Garden Trellis

Step 1 - Choose Location
It is imperative that you choose the right location for your trellis. The area you choose should be able to receive ample sunlight so that your climbing plant can be supported sufficiently. Also, the area you choose will influence the installation. Decide early if your garden trellis is going to be free-standing or will you be placing it next to a wall or a post.
Step 2 - Determine the Length of the Trellis for Installation
A garden trellis can either be fixed into the ground or a pot. Your location will influence your installation, too. If your trellis is in an area that will enable it to function as free-standing, you will have to drive the trellis at least 2 feet into the ground for good support. If the trellis will be placed near a wall or a post, you can use brackets to secure the trellis along with fixing the trellis into the ground.
Step 3 - Fix Trellis into the Ground
Once you have determined the location, fix the garden trellis into the ground. You will do that by using a hammer on the trellis. If you think that the ground area you are trying to fix the trellis to is too strong, dig a hole into the ground, put the trellis in, and then repack the soil around the trellis. Make sure you press firmly the soil around the trellis bottom. The more firmly you press the soil here, the more secure your trellis will be.
Step 4 - Use the Level
Take the carpenter’s level mentioned in the tools and materials needed list. Lay the level on the ground and make sure that it is plumb. Adjust the garden trellis according to this level. Make sure the garden trellis is not uneven. Shovel a layer of pebbles and small stones around the trellis. This will increase the support and help secure the trellis.
Step 5 - Secure the Trellis to a Wall of Fence
If your garden trellis is not free-standing and in an area near a wall, for example, you can add more support to it. The trick is to fix a mounting bracket behind the trellis, screw holes into the wall or post near the trellis, and fix the trellis into the wall. This extra reinforcement will prevent the trellis from falling as the weight of the climbing plant increases over time.
