A garage door torsion spring is a core support element of automatic garage doors. The device supports much of the weight of the garage door. This allows the electric motor to lift the door easily. The spring is wound around a rod found above the garage door opening. When the door is down, the spring winds tightly to create tight tension. The spring unwinds to release tension when the door is raised. This causes progressive wear and tear on the torsion with time. You may have to replace the device at some point. Step 1 – Note the Door Features
Close the garage door. Take measurements of the height and width of the door. If your door has a number of horizontal sections, take down the number. You also need to note down what material the garage door is constructed from. This information will enable the torsion supplier to make a good estimate of the weight of your garage door. This is a vital guideline if you’re to obtain a spring that will work efficiently once installed.
Step 2 – Measure the Inside Diameter of Torsion
Place a ladder against the garage door. Climb to the top to access the spring. Take the measurement of the inside diameter of the spring. This is the space across the center of the spring, from one end to the other. This distance does not include the spring coil itself.
Step 3 – Take Wire Diameter of Torsion
Place the beginning point of the measuring tape at one end of the spring. Stretch the tape along the length of the spring till it gets to the 20 inch mark. Carefully count how many coils are found within this distance. When you divide 20 by the number of coils, it should give you the diameter of the spring. This is also known as the coil size.
Step 4 – Measure the Torsion Length
Place your measuring tape along the entire length of the spring. Note the measurement. Do not include anchoring cones as they will give you an inaccurate measurement. If your torsion spring is broken, take measurements of all the sections and add them up to get the total length.
Step 5 – Coil Direction
Observe the end of the spring to determine what direction it takes. An excess half coil that points clockwise indicates a left-wound spring. Where the half coil points counterclockwise, it indicates a right-wound spring.
Step 6 – Locate Identification Plate
This is usually found near the motor cover. Note the horsepower of the torsion. It will ensure that you obtain a spring that has the appropriate power capacity to efficiently operate your garage door.
Step 7 – Purchasing
Take all of the above information with you to a torsion spring supplier. The supplier will use this information to get you a device that will fit properly into your garage door.
