This is the second half of a 2-part article on how to soundproof a floor in your home. In the first article, we discussed the process involving taking measurements of the floor where the installation will take place and purchasing the material for soundproofing the floor. The article also discussed preparing the floor prior to the installation of the soundproofing material.

In this concluding article on how to soundproof a floor under carpeting, we will discuss the steps necessary to fasten the soundproof material to the floor and how to finish the installation by reinstalling or replacing the carpeting.

Cut the Soundproof Floor Material

With the debris removed from the floor, it is time to set the soundproof floor material in place. Take the claw hammer or pry bar and use it to remove the baseboards that run alongside the bottom of the walls. Apply gentle pressure as your pull the boards away from the lower wall. Use a pencil or Sharpie pen to mark the back of the baseboards with a number to correspond to the wall area that it was removed from. This will help you easily reattach the baseboards.

For a room that is not shaped irregularly, or in an odd way, simply take your utility knife blade and run it through the fiberglass or foam material as you place the material into the corners of the room. A room that is shaped in a regular way will be easier to cut the material for than a room that has different angles and lengths/widths. For an irregular room cut the material as square as you are able and also cut smaller pieces that can be adjoined using double sided tape at the seams.

Affix the Soundproof Floor Material to Floor

Once you have completed cutting the material in step 1, place double-sided tape on the side of the soundproof material that you will be affixing to the floor. Press the material into place as you lay the material on the floor. This will set the soundproofing in place and allow you to proceed to the next step in the process. You may also use carpet tacks or nails to attach the soundproof material to the floor. You may also want to use a stapler.

Reinstall the Carpeting

With the soundproof material in place on the floor, you need to take the carpeting that was removed in the third step of Part 1 of this article. If the carpeting is in need of replacement, purchase new carpeting and install it in the room over the soundproof material that you have finished putting down.

This will complete the process of soundproofing your flooring under carpeting and make your next steps quieter for you and the entire household or complex.
