How to Spread Sand Under a Crawl Space How to Spread Sand Under a Crawl Space
Crawl spaces are common in modern houses. This portion of the house is exists for workers to access plumbing and electrical systems. Some homeowners make use of this as an extra storage space to store unused personal belongings.
Although the area is normally left vacant, you still want to keep it organized and clean. Keep the space as dry as possible and remove the moisture from time to time. The best way to do so is to fill it with sand. Follow these steps to properly and easily keep your crawlspace dry with sand.
Step 1 - Cleaning the Area
Before anything else, you have to make sure that the space is free from any dirt. Use a broom stick to get rid of those dried leaves, candy wrappers and other garbage you can find on the floor. Do not start the filling procedure unless the area is totally clean.
Step 2 - Gather the Sand
Fill your pail with sand using the shovel. It might take some time to complete the process since you have to keep returning to load the bin again. You can use as many pails or garbage bins as you have in your house so that you can fill the space with sand faster. Besides, you have your push cart.
It will not be difficult for you to transport the bins of sand. Be patient about it. Some would rather bring the entire sack of sand to the place to make the filling faster, but when you do that, you cannot control the amount of sand that you pour. Doing it that way will only make it hard for you to fill the space with an even amount.
Step 3 - Spread the Sand to the Space
Pour the pail of sand into the space and spread it with the shovel. Flatten the entire floor with sand until the whole space is completely covered. The spreading process can be tedious since you will have to ensure that it all has equal amount of sand. The floor must have an equal level to prevent bumps.
You do not really need to fill the whole space with very thick sand, just enough to cover the entire space. Filling the crawl space with sand and spreading it all over the area is very easy, but it’s also incredibly tedious. The work requires you to exert so much effort in transferring heavy bins and spreading it all over the floor.
Make sure to use a lighter shovel so you will not hurt your arms while doing the job. Doing so lessens your burden. Keep in mind that once you are done, you will surely reap the reward of having a clean and dry crawl space.
