How to Test a 12-Volt Battery How to Test a 12-Volt Battery

What You'll Need

In order to keep your car running smoothly, it will be necessary to be aware of the maintenance needed for a 12 volt battery. One of the processes will be how to test the battery to ensure that it holds sufficient charge for your purposes.

Step 1 – Gain Access

The first step necessary is to gain full access to the 12 volt battery to enable you to test it properly. Although it can be tested while it remains fitted into the car, this will require all the power switches within the car to be disconnected. Remove the battery from the car and place it on a flat, solid surface.

Step 2 – Connect Probes

Turn on the voltmeter and connect the probes to the terminals of the 12 volt battery, making sure they correlate in respect of the positive and negative points. Some meters will comprise clips while others will need to be held in place.

Step 3 – Check Reading

Consider the reading on the display to determine the level of power the 12 volt battery holds. A reading of between 12.5 and 12.8 volts will be a sufficient charge and anything lower than this will require it to be recharged.
