How to Turn Off the House Water Meter How to Turn Off the House Water Meter

What You'll Need
Pipe wrench
Work gloves

If you will be working on the plumbing in your home, there are many times you will need to turn off your house water meter to make sure the water is not flowing to the area where you will be making repairs or installing new pipe or fixtures.

Step 1 - Locate the Water Meter for Your Home

Locate the water meter for your home. In most parts of the country, your home's water meter will be located at or near the road or street you live on and in front of your home. The water meter should be installed right at ground level and will be covered with a iron plate similar to those used on manhole covers. If you live in a cold climate, the water meter may be installed just outside your basement.

Step 2 - Shut Off the Water

Depending on the type of water meter installed in your home, you will either need to turn a valve clockwise to close it or use a pipe wrench to close the shutoff valve.

Shutting Off Water from a Well

If your home uses well water, you probably have no meter installed at all. If this is the case, simply turn off the control valves at the base of your well pump.
