How to Use a Pool Vacuum Hose How to Use a Pool Vacuum Hose
A pool vacuum hose is the most important tool you can have for keeping your pool clean and free from dirt, debris and other contaminants. If your pool has a pump installed, you can use a pool vacuum hose and a telescoping pole to make cleaning your pool much easier. Using the vacuum hose is not difficult, and this easy to follow how-to guide will walk you through the process.
Step 1 - Skim the Surface of the Pool
Before you start vacuuming your swimming pool, use the pool skimmer net to skim the surface of the pool and remove any leaves or other debris that may be floating on the surface.
Step 2 - Attach Vacuum Hose to Telescoping Pole
Attach the vacuum hose to the telescoping pole that you will use to vacuum the bottom of the pool. On most units, you simply need to push the hose on to the adapter opening and twist or lock it with the clips.
Step 3 - Connect Vacuum Head Adapter to Skimmer Outlet
Locate the vacuum head outlet on your skimmer box. Then, connect the vacuum head adapter to the outlet so that you can attach the vacuum hose.
Step 4 - Prime the Vacuum Hose
Before you attach your vacuum hose, you'll need to prime it. Priming the vacuum hose simply refers to the process of filling it with water so that air won't pass into the pump system when you start vacuuming the bottom of the pool. So, place the hose in the pool in front of the return valve from the pump for your pool. Allow the hose to remain there until no more air bubbles come out of the end of the hose.
Step 5 - Attach Vacuum Hose to Skimmer Basket
Connect the vacuum hose to the vacuum head adapter on the skimmer box outlet. Depending on the type of hose you have, you may be able to simply twist the hose onto the adapter, or you may need to loosen, adjust and tighten retaining clips that hold the hose into place on the adapter. Once you connect the hose, allow the hose to begin flowing water through the skimmer box basket and valve before you start vacuuming.
Step 6 - Vacuum the Pool
Using the telescoping pole, position the vacuum head at one end of the pool. Then, start pushing the vacuum back and forth as you move your way along the bottom surface of the pool. Once you reach one end of the pool, take the telescoping pole and hose and go to the other side of the pool and then start vacuuming in the opposite direction until you reach the end where you first started. Depending on how much dirt and debris is at the bottom of your pool, you may need to make two or more passes with the vacuum in order to properly clean it.
