The perfect tool for removing damaged spark plugs is the spark plug thread chaser. This tool can also be used to restore blocked plugs, minor cross threading, and even clean out carbon and corrosion. Used with a suitable plug spanner, this tool is a perfect addition to any mechanic’s arsenal. The spark plug thread chaser has a narrow design that enables it to get into those hard to reach places.
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Spark plug thread chaser
- Plug Spanner
- Petroleum jelly
- Protective gloves
- Protective eyewear
Step 1 – Preparation
Before attempting to use the spark plug thread chaser, start your engine to let it warm up. Then, let it cool down some. Always shut off the electricity to avoid the possibility of shock. You can do this by disconnecting the negative cable from the battery.
Step 2 – Using the Chaser
Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the threads of the chaser. This will help clean and capture any debris. Insert the chaser into the plug spanner and begin screwing in the spark plug thread chaser. Remove the chaser and the job is done.
You can also soak the damaged plug in PB Blaster or a similar lubricant the night before. This will help loosen the plug. After removing the damaged plug with the spark plug thread chaser, you can also spray a small amount of foam shaving cream into the cylinder to remove any remaining debris.
