How to Use a Tree Guard How to Use a Tree Guard
You generally use a tree guard to protect trees from any damage that can occur to them. The use of a tree guard depends on its material e.g. wood, paper, metal, burlap or plastic. You can even build your own tree guard with a couple of empty plastic bottles and a few other tools. Make sure that each one of the wooden stakes is about 2 feet long and that the empty bottles are two-liter soda bottles.
Step 1 – Cutting the Bottles
Cut the empty bottles from the top and bottom with the utility knife. Put them upon the tree and make an overlap between both bottles. In this manner, you will create a plastic tube of about one or two feet long. Use the utility knife again to cut the bottles horizontally. In case the tree trunk is too wide, open the bottles and form a tube again.
Step 2 – Placing the Wooden Stakes
Put a wooden stake into the ground near the tube you just made out of empty plastic bottles. Cut two holes in the bottle parts you had cut away when you started. Put some string through the holes and tie them securely to the wooden stake. Now it is time to put a couple more wooden stakes into the ground surrounding the tree.
Home-made tree guards can be very efficient in protecting the tree from windy weather, insects, animals and disease. You can also use tree guards to prevent animals from urinating or excreting at the foot of the tree. Other animals may eat away the bark so the tree guard keeps them away from the tree as well.
Larger tree guards which are made of strong material can protect the tree from deer so that the deer will not come and hit the tree with their antlers. They can also protect trees from such garden equipment as lawnmowers and weed trimmers.
Plastic tree guards are the most common type of tree guard today. They are often installed at the foot of the tree and they are good at protecting the tree from mice and other rodents, rather than at protecting the tree from weather. Spiral tree guards are usually higher than plastic tree guards but they generally protect the tree from mice and rodents in the same efficient way.
Tree guards made out of paper are among the most efficient types of them all. They focus more on protecting the lower part of the tree and its roots from low temperatures and cold weather. The paper tree guard is weather-resistant and animal-repellent at the same time. When they are manufactured, the paper material of these tree guards is treated with a chemical that keeps insects and pests away, therefore it is better if you use a paper guard rather than a plastic one.
Burlap tree guards are among the oldest types of them all because burlap has been used for tree guards for several years now. It does not provide very good protection against cold weather but it definitely helps in protecting the tree from animals. This is because burlap tends to cause eye and nose irritation to animals, thus keeping them away from your tree.
