How to Use Mildew Resistant Paint

If you are trying to convert your basement into a livable space, mildew resistant paint is a necessity. The natural dampness of the basement, along with the coolness of the concrete can cause mildew and mold to grow. Mildew resistant paint is specially treated to prevent and stop the growth of mildew and common molds. It can also be used in common mildew areas like bathrooms and kitchens. Using mildew resistant paint sounds like it should be easy, and it is, but it requires more steps than regular paint. The information below will show you how to properly apply the paint.

Step 1 - Clean the Walls

Prior to using mildew resistant paint you first need to clean the walls. This is especially the case when there is already evidence of mildew or mold growth. The least amount of mildew on the wall when you begin will better ensure the success of the mildew resistant paint. Choose a good, non-toxic mildew and mold remover. These can come in concentrated forms so make sure to read the label and mix it with water as the instructions discuss.

Wet a sponge with the cleaner and begin wiping down the walls. Work in small sections. Once one section is wiped down; use the soft bristle brush to scrub the wall. Spend extra time on areas that contain mold or mildew. Pay close attention to the bottom of the wall as well as the top and corners. This is where mold and mildew will form. Plug in the dehumidifier and allow it to remove moisture from the area. This will also cause the walls to dry quickly and evenly.

Step 2 - Prime the Walls

Step 3 - Apply the Mildew Resistant Paint

You will notice that mildew resistant paint is often thinner than primer that contains the same chemicals and properties. Make sure the primer has dried completely before you begin to paint the wall. Stir the mildew resistant paint to make sure it is properly mixed. Pour some of the paint in a paint tray and use the roller to apply it to the wall. To make sure you get all of the critical areas use a paint brush to complete the bottom and top of the wall as well as the corners.
