Snap off deck screws, commonly called counter snap screws, will give you the look of a finishing nail while being able to drill them in place. These screws are very popular for those who are picky about how their finished deck will look, and just give a more clean appearance on your finished product. They are also simple to use as long as you have the right materials.
Step 1 - Mark the Spot
Once you place a snap off head screw in to your deck, you will not be able to remove it to change the placement. Because of this you need to make sure you have the areas marked exactly where you are going to place them.
Step 2 - Place the Fixture
Set the fixture directly above your mark. Place the screw in the top of the fixture, and slowly drill the screw into place. As the stress builds in the screw from the fixture, the screw will snap off at the countersunk score.
Step 3 - Remove the Fixture
When you remove the fixture from the spot, the screw head will fall. Simply toss this out. You can now fill in the left over hole with wood putty if you choose.
