How to Wire a New Battery to Your Golf Cart Motor
If you are a golfer, you probably know that the golf cart motor is run by a set of 6 batteries. You will need to perform regular maintenance on your golf cart to keep it in good working condition. Wiring the golf cart motor is one of the jobs you can do yourself. With the right tools and this guide you will be able to do the job yourself and save some money.
Step 1 – Locate the Batteries
The first step in wiring a battery to the golf cart motor is to locate the battery compartment. As a general rule the battery compartment is always located below the seat of the golf cart.
Step 2 – Open the Battery Compartment
Lift up the seat of the golf cart. Now open the battery compartment. In side is the battery bank, comprised of 6 individual batteries. These supply power to the golf cart motor.
Step 3 – Remove the Wiring
All of the six batteries in the battery bank are connected by a negative cable and a positive cable or wire. You can identify the negative cable as it will be in black. Carefully unplug the negative wire and the positive wire. Repeat this process on all six of the batteries. Starts removing the wires, first on the batteries at the front then proceed to the back.
Step 4 – Remove the Clips
Once the wires are detached it will be easy to take the batteries out. In some models the batteries that power the golf cart motor are secured in place by clips. If so, you will have to take the clips off. Use a wrench to loosen the nuts. Remove the nuts as well as the washer on the brackets.
Step 5 – Remove the Batteries
Once the clips are taken off, lift the batteries from their slots. Also make sure to store the clips, nuts and washers, as you will need them later.
Step 6 – Placing the New Batteries
The next step in the golf cart motor battery replacement is to install the new batteries. Place the batteries in the slots. Place the clips or brackets back on them.
Step 7 – Reconnecting the Wires
Connect the main positive line that originates from the cart's frame, to the first battery. It has to go into the positive slot. Then proceed to connect the wire from the negative terminal of the first battery to the positive slot of the second battery. Continue till you have wired the last battery. The wire from the last battery will connect to the golf cart frame.
Step 8 – Connect the Power Cable
Once you have connected all the batteries, connect the power cable to the positive slot on the battery.
Step 9 – Close the Battery Compartment
Close the battery compartment by replacing the cover. Place the seat back down on the golf cart.
Step 10 – Start up the Motor
Turn the ignition key, the golf cart motor should start up. If it does not start up, check your connections again.
