How to Wire Your Man Cave for Surround Sound How to Wire Your Man Cave for Surround Sound
A man cave just isn’t a man cave without a wide-screen television and a surround-sound system. You need to be able to actually feel a game right down to the crunch of the tackles. You can choose between 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 surround sound. The difference is in the number of the speakers and their angles. Whichever you choose, the game will come alive like never before.
Step 1 - Install the Front Speakers
Position the television on the middle of the wall facing your couch. Place the center speaker either under or above the television. Make sure the front of the speaker is flush with the front of the television.
Next place the front speakers near the corners of your man cave. Angle the speakers so they face that sweet spot in the center of the couch. They need to be equidistant from the center speaker and also equidistant from the focal point. The distance is important so don’t just estimate. Take the time to measure properly. Have the speakers at the same height as your ears when you sit on the couch.
Step 2 - Position the Rear Speakers
Now set up the rear speakers in your man cave. They should be far enough behind the couch for the sound to spread. Angle the rear speakers to face the focal point on the couch. They should be the same distance apart as the front speakers and either wall-mounted or at ear level when seated.
Step 3 - Place the Central Rear Speaker (6.1 Surround Sound)
The 6.1 surround sound is more than an intermediate step between 5.1 and 7.1. It offers a different experience and requires an additional speaker and a subwoofer for your man cave. Place the center speaker and rear speakers as with 5.1. Then position the central rear speaker behind the couch, directly opposite the front center speaker, and equidistant from the rear speakers.
Step 4 - Place the Surround Speakers (7.1 Surround Sound)
With 7.1 surround sound you’ll need to place the surround speakers after you’ve placed the front and center speakers. These surround speakers go on the side, just behind where you’ll sit on the couch. The front edge of the speakers should line up with the back of your head. Place them opposite each other and facing into the center of the room. Ideally you would mount them on the wall. If you can’t do that, place them on speaker stands so they’re at head height or higher when you’re seated.
Step 5 - Place Rear Speakers (7.1 Surround Sound)
The last step for 7.1 is the rear speakers. Place them at an angle, facing the focal point midway between the surround speakers. Locate them at a point directly behind the center of the couch and equidistant from the focal point between the surround speakers. Mount them to the wall or on speakers stands at ear height or higher. These speakers supply the background noise and sound effects.
Step 6 - Test the System
Finally switch the system on to test it all. You might need to make small final adjustments to the speaker placing once you’re seated and comfortable. When you’ve done that, you can sit back, relax and enjoy your man cave properly.
