Decorative wood beams will increase the value of your home and make a beautiful addition to any room. They are easy to install as well, and the project will only take a weekend.

Step 1

Measure the space you have available on the ceiling and use these numbers to order your beams.

For this project, it’s best to rent scaffolding instead of using standard ladders. You will be working at heights that can be dangerous, and both of your hands will be tied up. Scaffolding provides a much safer venue for this type of work.

Mark the ceiling where you will place the beams.

Step 2

Use your angle finder to calculate the angles at each slope in the ceiling.

Step 3

Snap a chalk line to mark the location for the beams. It’s best to do several marks at a time and install only what you’ve marked as you work. This way, you will be able to spot problems early on and correct them without having to remove all the beams to fix one spot.

Step 4

Install your mounting blocks every 24 to 36 inches along the lines made with the chalk. Use your 4-inch toggle bolts if there are no ceiling joists. The blocks need to fit the inside dimensions of the wood beam.

Step 5

Cut the top of the wood beam using the angles you measured in the earlier steps. Make sure you measure from the center mark. You will use the same method to cut the bottom angle, too.

Step 6

You may need someone to help you with this step.

Set the beam on your mounting blocks and push it tightly against the ceiling. Use drywall screws to secure the beam on to the blocks. Have your helper hold the other end of the beam in place to keep it even and keep it from falling.

Step 7

Use wood filler to fill in any holes left by the screws. Make sure you are using a wood filler that matches the color of the wood for the beam.
