A time may come when you need to install replacement cupboard doors due to wear, damage or renovations.

Step One - Finding a Replacement

If you are only replacing the doors on your cupboards and drawers, then you should order new doors from a custom manufacturer that specializes in replacement doors.  These companies will match the color and texture of your current cabinets with a great deal of exactness. Before you order, read customer reviews to verify that the company is reliable and makes quality products. You can find several of these companies online, and there are several with modest prices and good quality.

If you are refacing your cupboards as well as replacing the cupboard doors, then you can find replacements to match the refacing materials at any home improvement center.

You may decide on ready-to-finish doors that you can stain or paint to match the cupboards. You would likely make this choice if you are sanding and refinishing the cupboards.

Before you order, diagram your entire room and measure each door opening exactly. If you are removing old doors, you can measure the actual doors to be sure you allow the appropriate overhang.

One of the most important decisions you’lll need to make in ordering replacement doors is the style of door. There are dozens of different styles, and you’ll need to have a good idea of which type you want before you call to order.

Step Two - Preparation

Remove old doors using a screwdriver or drill with a screwdriver bit. Fill any screwholes in the cabinets with wood putty. If you are refinishing or refacing the cabinets, do that work at this point.

If you have cupboard doors that you are finishing yourself, stain or paint them now and let them cure completely. If you are using a stain, you will likely want two coats of clear finish to give you a hard surface on the cupboard doors.

Choose and purchase the hinges for your cupboard doors. There are many different styles from which to choose, but you need to decide on the hinges before the next step of the installation process.

Step Three - Measure

Measure each door to align it properly over the opening. Also measure for hinge placement. You want these measurements to be identical for each door. Once you have this distances measured, create a template out of paper with the place for the hinges cut out. You can use this template to mark each door.

Make a separate template to mark the hinge location on the sides of the cupboard so that you can easily align the doors.

Step Four - Installation

Following your markings, align each door. Attach the hinge to the door, then use a level to line the door up on the cupboard.

Be sure that the door is straight, is covering all gaps, and the hinges are level before you use the screwdriver or drill to finish attaching the hinges.

After screwing in the hinges, check the door again for alignment and adjust as necessary.

Replacing cupboard doors is a great way to upgrade the look of your kitchen without a great deal of trouble or expense.
